Kota Samarahan, 19th August 2021: A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Hexa BRT today in UNIMAS to signify the research collaboration between both parties.

This MoA consists of two research projects on conversion of sludge palm oil to biodiesel and formulation of fuel additives. The research will be undertaken by Associate Professor Dr Sim Siong Fong and Associate Professor Dr Tay Meng Guan from Faculty of Resource Science & Technology, UNIMAS.

During the MoA signing ceremony, UNIMAS was represented by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and Hexa BRT was represented by the Managing Director, Mr William Liang.

This event was witnessed by UNIMAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr Wan Hashim bin Wan Ibrahim and Hexa BRT Financial Controller, Mr Michael Liang.

Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim in his speech highlights that this MoA between UNIMAS and Hexa BRT that aims at conversion of oil palm wastes and product innovation marks proactive involvement of Academia and Industry in supporting the national policy of utilizing sustainable energy sources which is in line with SDG12 on Responsible consumption and production.

Professor Datuk Dr Kadim added that strengthening research capabilities through sustainable strategic collaboration with industries allows the University to remain competitive in the arena of research and innovation.

The Research, Innovation and Enterprise Centre (RIEC) of UNIMAS has been recognized by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia as an approved research institution under Section 34B of the Income Tax Act 1967 which encourages the more active involvement of the private sector in contributing to research and development.

Through this recognition, cash contributions for research activities from companies are eligible for incentives by double tax deduction (DTD). Noted that these activities comply with the definition of research provided in the Investment Act 1986.

Managing Director of Hexa BRT, Mr William emphasized that the core value of the company is to be environmentally sustainable and they are committed to waste utilization, waste reduction as well as carbon footprint in all their business endeavours.

He concluded that this collaboration marked the beginning of the collaboration between Hexa BRT at UNIMAS and more potential collaborations are on the horizon.
